Kelly "May" Wiechman, LMLP

Licensed Masters Level Psychologist

Kelly Wiechman, LMLP completed her BS in Psychology in 2016 and MS in Clinical Psychology in 2018 both from Emporia State University. Prior to joining us Kelly has primarily worked with incarcerated populations within the Kansas prison

system to include both adult and juvenile offenders. Kelly joins us with her experience as both a therapist and a psychological evaluator. Prior to working for Doctor Wes Kelly has been conducting clinical assessments since 2018 for the Kansas Department of Corrections, which include assessments for various levels of psychopathology to include mood disorders, personality disorders, and adaptive functioning assessments. Kelly has been providing treatment to a wide spectrum of disorders including those involving prior traumatic experiences, anxiety, depression, behavioral disorders, adjustment issues, and psychosis; in addition to these areas Kelly has experience with providing treatment in other areas of concern including grief and loss, identity issues, addiction, and managing change.

Kelly’s treatment ideology takes a focused approach that centers around the client to create a comfortable and professional setting that allows for open processing of the client’s experience. She tends to take a more reality-based approach and utilized skills across various treatment modalities including cognitive behavioral interventions, mindfulness, psychoeducation, and motivational interviewing. She believes that the context of the client is critical when providing treatment. Understanding nothing happens within a vacuum, a therapist must take a holistic view and consider the varying factors involved in an individual’s perception including cultural background, situational concerns, familial relations, medical and genetic factors, and the systems which impacts the individual. She believes that building motivation and cultivating willingness are two of the strongest indicators for treatment success and she is always committed to meeting the client where they are currently at, to work together and achieve therapeutic goals such as symptom management and developing techniques to improve the overall health and wellbeing of her clients.

Kelly accepts Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Aetna, Ambetter and KanCare (Medicaid) on the Aetna and United panels for children and teens. She does not accept KanCare Sunflower. She does not accept any form of Medicare.

From Dr. Wes: Because we have two Kelly's now, we've taken to calling this one Kelly May which is a shortened version of her middle name. As an LMLP, Kelly May is part of our training program. Because my major area of clinical interest is psychotherapy, I have confined my testing and assessment to forensic cases, and in the last few years I've done very little of that. Thus, I was very excited to have Kelly apply to do testing and assessment at FPS, along with a regular caseload of therapy clients. For the first time, we'll be able to provide a broad array of testing for children, teens, and some adults for anxiety, autism, bipolar disorder, depression and various intellectual impediments. We'll also be offering a expanded battery for ADHD testing to be used when clients are seeking only an evaluation and not therapy and medication management. She's also seeing therapy clients on BCBS, Ambetter, Aetna and some KanCare. If you'd like to schedule an intake with Kelly May for therapy or testing while she still has availability, please complete the Ask About Services form.

Helping you understand and enhance your mental health...

As a therapist, understanding the myriad factors that influence and impact us as individuals is key in developing insight in to who we are as people. I am here to enhance client knowledge and help change behavior along the path of their personal self-discovery, allowing for a broader perspective and creating a starting point for learning optimal ways to function and manage our needs.”

Areas of Specialization

1

Adolescents and Young Adults
Kelly has worked with teens and adults dealing with a wide spectrum of mental health concerns. She strives to meet clients where they are at and to create a comfortable setting that allows each client to openly present as just who they are without fear of judgment.

2
Psychological Assessment

Kelly is starting a new program of psychological assessment at FPS. She has been conducting psychological evaluations for most of her career and can provide a broad-based assessment on teens, children and adults to clarify and categorize psychopathology and determine impairment, allowing for a more comprehensive understading and treatment. She can assess mood and anxiety disorders, Autism, ADHD, behavioral disorders, and cognitive functioning.

3

Trauma Mitigation
Untreated, trauma can impact many facets of one’s life, including how we interact with others, society, and even ourselves. Kelly has worked extensively with clients who have experienced traumatic events and who continue to struggle with emotional reactivity, re-experience, and distortions in perception. She helps clients recognize the ways in which these events continue to impact their lives while helping them broaden their life context to allow the trauma to become less central to their wellbeing.
